Golf on TV - Ben Curtis on European Tour - Portugal    Back to Topics  Page: 1 of 5

It is good to see that the Thursday GC European tour broadcast from Portugal prominently featured Ben Curtis. He is treated with the respect he deserves on this tour and Golf Channel broadcast as a former Open Champion and the #37 ranked golfer in the world. As an example, Ben was inserted in a feature pairing with Padraig Harrington on Thursday/ Friday. Curtis shot a 68; Harrington a 69.
Unfortunately, Curtis is often ignored on PGA tour events - as I have stated in this forum before.

no offense to BC - but being as he's on a rather LONG list of "one-hit (Major) wonders," and that he hasn't won a professional event in 3 years (even while doing time at some lesser Euro events)... isn't going to have a player at the top of anybody's "must see" list, nor does it make them worthy of any "featured pairings" on the PGATour.

I admit Ben did not have the best of years in 2009 but besides the top ten in Hartford, he also had top tens at the BMW in Wentworth (a very big event) and the European Open in May. Ben was also in contention at the Players.
Further, he was 9th on the FedEx cup last year,in contention at the PGA - finishing second,on the Ryder Cup team - defeating Westwood in singles and representing the US in the World Cup in China last November.
I contend that Curtis is one of the top US players in the World and the folks on the European tour seem to agree.

The only golfers who get the attention the deserve are those that don't do anything on tour. If you are successful like Tiger you may get more attention than you deserve. If you a Michelle Wie you certainly get more attention than you deserve based on your LPGA record.

Curtis, for Ohio, won his majors overseas so it is only fitting the Europeans would give him more attention than the US which is more into what have you done lately mode.

Golf is like the better mouse trap that if you invent one the world will beat a path to your door. If you start to win consistently you will get more attention than you want. If you don't win consistently you are just one of a bunch of no name golfers on tour.
Gary Player called them hotdog players. You are at a tournament and you see the threesome coming up the fairway. Who are these guys? That is Kite, Crenshaw and Love. Ok lets watch them. The next group comes up. Who are these? Heintz, Laird and Matteson. They are nobodies. Lets go get a hotdog.
And it didn't matter that they were on the top of the leader board the time.

Curtis has proven that he is not a one hit wonder. he led at the 2008 PGA after round 2 and 3 - eventually finishing second. He was beat by a fabulous 66-66 finish by Harrington but definitely did not melt down like others in the tournament e.g JB Holmes.
No doubt, Curtis needs to improve his final round performance - but he is an excellent US player who rarely misses a cut and is well thought of around the world.

There are 15 other U.S. players ranked ahead of BC on the WGR List (he's actually 37th this week) -- and the only reason he gets props playing in Europe is his 2003 win in the British -- which still leaves him down ANY list of so-called "top players" no matter how you want to quantify it.

perhaps you can show me where he's WON another Major Championship since the BO in 2003.

I understand your point, and am not trying to put BC in a Woods, Michelson class. But he is in the upper echelon of US players and is often ignored even if he is playing well. You might think that Hunter Mahan is the next coming for example but he has only won one tournament on the PGA Tour and is not exactly Mr. Excitement.

With all due respect, your definition of a "one hit wonder" would then apply to Davis Love III and Fred Couples - which is a silly contention.
So - I will stand by my original point.
