watching the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies last night, I began thinking of what current players will be go into Hall of Fame:

Tiger, Lefty, Ernie, Paddy are all on the fast track to the Hall of Fame. Ochoa has also qualified but she has to wait a few more years. Laura Davies is almost there, but her time has probably passed to be automatically qualified. She will get in on the veterans or foreign ballot some day.

Besides Ochoa, I don't think there is a golfer (male or female) younger than Tiger that is on the fast track to the WGHoF.

Men:

Ogilvy? of golfers younger than tiger, I think he is the current leader.

Sergio, Henrik? no chance at this time, they have to kick into a higher gear best Euro chance of the established stars.

ditto for Casey, Donald, Poulter, Mahan, OHair, Z. Johnson. On their ways to David Toms type careers.

this leaves Ryo and Rory; obviously they are still very young and their careers are just starting, but of any male golfer younger than Tiger, I think these two have the best chance of getting to the Hall of Fame.

how about the Ladies:

Creamer? IMO on her way to a borderline WGHoF career. Think Meg Mallon, Dottie Pepper

Pettersen? she might get very close if she can get mentally tougher.

Kerr? basically another Mallon/Pepper career

Stanford? She is going to have to kick it to be even considered. And quickly.

JiYai Shin? Mentally tough, she has got a great start with two multi win seasons (plus a major). She might very well qualify within a few years. right now, she is the leading contender.

Yani Tseng? She has the talent, but does she have the ambition? IMO, the jury is still out.

In an effort to a hopeless attempt preempt any snarky comments I'll mentioned Michelle Wie.

At this time, I think she has no chance at the hall of Fame. I do think she has the talent, (obviously she has ***not*** demonstrated it). But she has to start winning and start winning frequently.

Please keep comments constructive.

Vijay Singh, 3 majors a bunch of wins and knocked Tiger out of the No.1 spot in the world for a while.

The younger than Tiger crowd hasnt established themselves at all yet. What about DLIII and Freddie Couples? I think those will be interesting debates.

Vijay is already in the hof. DLIII I would think is a shoo in. Freddie should get in also. Anyone with 20 wins, whether they won a mojor or not, should get in. Monty?

Vijay is already in the WGHoF, Class of 2006.

DLIII and Freddie will probably get in eventually. Like Lanny Wadkins, they both have had borderline careers, one major and a bunch of wins.

As I watched the ceremonies, I was conflicted. I was disappointed that more Hall of Famers were not there but as the night went on, it looked more and more like a informercial for the World Golf Hall of Fame.

When I was a youngster in the late 60's and early 70's, I went to the baseball HoF every year for the induction ceremony in Copperstown. All the VIPs stayed at the Otesaga Hotel on Otsego lake. I would bring my baseball and I would get autographs from all the HoFers. Bob Feller, Roy Campanella, Casey Stengle, Bill Dickey, Yogi Berra. I was awestruck by Sandy Koufax, he was a giant of a man.

Last night, these are the Hall of Famers that attended:

Louise Suggs
Carol Semple Thompson
Donna Caponi
Carol Mann
Deane Beman
Joanne Carner
Charlie Sifford
Marlene Stewart Streit
Arnold Palmer

IMO, the induction ceremony should the Monday of TPC week or when a Champions Tour is in the area.

Most surprising absent Hall of Famer. Ben Crenshaw.

I wouldn't consider DLIII borderline, 20 wins a major and 2 Players, is a sure bet. Freddie on the other hand, is borderline, but I suspect he will make it also.

Which stat is it that makes you think that? Is it their combined total 1 PGA or Euro tour wins, or their combined total one top ten in a major?

Both are very promising for their age, just like Ty Tryon, Michelle Wie, CH III, and many others have been. But come on.

Sergio is on track. The Players, 7 PGA and 8 Euro victories before the age of 30 projects pretty well. And he'll probably end up as the all-time leader in Ryder Cup points. The obvious omission is of course a major win, but he's been in contention so many times that I think he gets at least one eventually.

By comparison, at 30 Phil had no majors, no Players, and 16 PGA wins.

About the only other one that I see that has yet to be mentioned is Retief Goosen. 19 wins on U.S. and Euro Tours including two U.S. Opens. Also 3 of his 4 Asian Tour wins are very good quality. One of his South African Opens is already counted as a Euro win, but his '95 SA Open was also a pretty decent field.

I'm not making the case for him... but I think I could easily make the case that he's as accomplished as Lanny or Hubert Green. Personally I'm a little "iffy" on both Lanny and Green, but they're in and if they are the baseline... it seems Goosen belongs as well.

I was focusing my discussion on golfers younger than Tiger.

Yes, I think Retief will be a HoFamer.

Ryo and Rory...yes still young...but I think (and hope) they "have it". I never thought Sergio "had it".

Good points, Sergio looks far better then I had previously thought.
