Ive been playing golf for around 18 months and have gotten to where Im shooting consistently 84-89 from the blues. My problem is Im erratic, Ive seen my swing on the launch monitor and I have the classic over the top swing and am losing tons of distance with every club(drives are 230-250 on average with this terrible swing flaw, that I either pull dead left or push slice with the occasional nice fade) my short game around the green is pretty solid because it seems like i spend all my time chipping around the green trying to get up and down for par due to my erratic shots. I got the inside approach swing trainer as a gift and was looking for feedback from people who have used this training tool. I havent had the chance to use it yet and wanted feedback before I do. Thanks for the replies

I bought a learning device called the Path Pro which is a similar device to the Inside Approach this summer. The Path Pro just has a lot more adjustable positions to cure swing faults besides OTT. But my primary swing fault was like yours, an OTT swing.

It really helped me groove the feel of the inside path and provided instant feed back when I made an OTT swing.

Take about 5-10 swings using in Inside Approach and then hit some balls without it. You'll easily transfer the feeling of an inside path to the course with a few sessions of practice. And you get instant feed back when you make an OTT swing because you'll hit the foam pad.

My instructor said it's the best tool he's ever used for curing the OTT swing with his students.

Glad you got it as a gift. It is a great training aid but you can get the same results by laying a head cover or a golf bag just to the outside of your golf ball. Then if you come over the top you will hit the head cover or the golf bag. The brain will soon get tried of going and getting the head cover and it will soon figuer out a way to swing from the inside in order to avoid the head cover. The inside approach will accomplish the same thing.

If you put a golf bag to the out side of the ball it will only take one swing of hitting the bag and then your brain will say don't want to do that again.

The idea is once you have developed an inside to inside swing using the IA the idea is to visualize it is there when you are making swings on the golf course.

Ah yes... playing for only 18 months.
Most everyone here has been playing for years - probably more years than we have been alive. We have all tried every contortion possible in search of the elusive repeatable swing. We have all read countless books and articles, taken lessons and debated the finer points of how much pressure should be applied by the third toe on the right foot during the downswing. Welcome to the club!
And good luck on your new journey of discovery into the wonderful world of golf :)

A cardboard box will do the same thing! If you're hard core, use a 4' long piece of 2X4. If you're really hard core, use a short piece of 2X4. Once you hit it, you won't ever want to do it again.

Use the cardboard box or your fancy swing trainer and try this. To cure your classic OTT move, accomplish these five checkpoints for your top of the backswing position: 1. Look at the ball 2. Turn your shoulder behind the ball 3. Allow your weight to transfer onto the back foot 4. Point your right elbow down 5. Keep your right palm connected to you left thumb

These checkpoints will prevent about a half dozen common mistakes and put you into a position to make a forward swing from a consistent top of the backswing position.

Start the downswing with a simple "bump" of your hips to move your weight back ONTO your fron foot ... no significant hip rotation yet. Next, "drop" your right elbow straight down close to your right hip. Did I mention looking at the ball ... OK, keep looking at where it WAS until the ball is 50 yards downrange. Finally, mindlessly "turn and throw" the handle of the club towards the a mental picture of where the target is located. Don't think, just allow the hips to turn and your arms to fling the club away like your didn't care!

What huh? The guy has an expensive training aid. A cardboard box will work just as well or even better. I was poking little fun at the device and golf marketing in general, trying to help others avoid the cost.

The guy said he had an over the top movement problem. I gave him 5 checkpoints for the top of the backswing position and how to initiate the down/foreward swing to cure the OTT move. If he does this, he won't need the box!

Was your post susposed to be some kind of a joke? If so, then you might want to label them just as my college students ask me to do ... huh! It's past my bedtime and I need all the beauty sleep I can get ... and I don't want to get cranky.

That was a joke. See how easy it is to label your jokes

You're good. I can't figure out if this is a positive or negative comment. Have you considered politics. Hope to see you on Sunday morning talk shows!

Mid 80's after 18 months is NORMAL for a dedicated learner in the hands of a skilled teacher.
