I can never get enough of hearing Hogan stories. Here's one I never heard that Lanny told yesterday as the inductees arrived for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony...

-------------------------
Wadkins’ display included the custom-made MacGregor driver he used to win the 1977 PGA Championship and a number of trophies and other artifacts, but it also includes a $4 check that Hogan wrote him on June 12, 1981. Wadkins never cashed it. The letter from Hogan that came with the check also is on display.

“Dear Lanny,” the letter begins. “Enclosed is my check for $4 for your skins yesterday. With all the confusion of our intruder, I simply forgot this. I can’t imagine this fellow doing that. It was my first experience of this kind, and I really didn’t know how to handle this situation, except to just quit.”

Wadkins, who won ’70 U.S. Amateur and 21 PGA Tour events, including the ’77 PGA and ’79 Players Championship, explained that he received the check as payment from Hogan for a friendly money game at Shady Oaks, Hogan’s club in Fort Worth , Texas .

“We got on about the 14th, 15th hole at Shady Oaks, and a guy rides up in a cart, and he's got shorts on and he's got a beard,” Wadkins said. “That's probably two of Hogan's least favorite things on a golf course. The guy doesn't ask anything, he says, `I'm going to join you guys the rest of the way in.’ Didn't even ask. Now, would you ride up to Ben Hogan and say, `Hey, I'm playing with you today?’ That didn't fly with Ben. He looked at me and said, `Are you ready to go?’ I said, `I'm with you, Ben.’ We drove off and left him sitting there. The frustration, he was so embarrassed, because this happened at his club, Shady Oaks, where he was a member, and thus the letter apologizing for the intruder. I was two skins up at the time. So I got the check for $4. His secretary's name was Clara Bell. She called me every month for the next six months wanting me to cash Mr. Hogan's check so she could balance his account. I said, `Clara Bell, there's no chance I'm cashing that check, ever.’’’

-------------------------

Congratulations to Lanny and Jose-Maria - two fine players who I enjoyed watching at the top of their games.

I'll never forget following Wadkins and Weiskopf as they went head-to-head in battling for the 1977 World Series of Golf in my hometowm of Akron. Wadkins pulled away and set a tournament record that was shattered by Olazabal in '90 or '91.

Wow... thanks Z...

I actually had that story (but slightly differently) told to me on a day that I was a guest at Shady Oaks in the early 90's. I was a guest at the club maybe 5 times over a 3 year span and saw Hogan there a couple of times. Despite being warned not to, the last time I actually got up the nerve to introduce myself. Hogan was eating a sandwich in the club room, I walked up said hello... and was was greeted by a barely an acknowledgment except for somewhat of a "harrumph" that was aimed my way. The only eye contact we made was when Ben looked disdainfully in my direction as he left about 20 minutes later. Not one of my favorite "legends of golf" moments, but certainly one of my most memorable ones. Yes... I actually did get invited back... but I continue to receive cr**p for my "Hogan moment" to this day.

Another Hogan story.

My friend (and golf mentor and partner) was a lifelong Yellow Pages executive with Southwestern Bell. I would believe this man if he told me the sun will come up tomorrow in the west. One day he and an associate were having lunch at Shady Oaks.

The associate spots Hogan dining with Marvin Leonard, founder of Colonial Country Club. "Hey, there's Benny! I used to play a lot of snooker with him before he was famous. I'm going to say hello.".

My friend strongly advised against it knowing how dour and private Hogan was. And the grill at Shady Oaks was about as private as it gets. The associate went anyway.

Before he could even arrive at the table, Hogan said in a voice that filled the room "Can't you see that I am having a conversation with Mr Leonard. Please leave us alone.".

The associate returned with his tail between his legs. He was warned.

I guess in the vernacular of today, we might call those stories, "Hogan being Hogan"! I guess a lot of things in his life shaped the man towards being grouchy.

Hey, keep the Hogan stories coming.

joro, you've got to have a couple!

Wadkins has told that story a few times over the years when he was in the tower. A good story, and a lesson on life about not intruding other people's personal space that more people should take to heart.

~~~~~~~~~~~
I actually still remember both tournaments you mentioned, even though I only saw them on TV. That '77 World Series was a great battle between Wadkins and Weiskopf, back and forth, and coming so close to Lanny's PGA win had me convinced that Lanny might be a worthy challenger to Jack just like Watson was that year.
Olazabal's performance at the '90 World Series was unexpected and he blew the field away that week with his great iron play. He had a near perfect 61, if I recall, and Lanny may have been on the leaderboard at that one too.
The '77 WSOG was also big because Weiskopf was kind of the "hometown hero" since he was from nearby Cleveland. So he had a LOT of fans in the gallery. I know he shot a record-tying 29 on the front nine, then completely stalled with a 36 on the back. I think Hale Irwin tied him for second.
Good memory on Ollie's 61, too. I have a picture of myself standing under the old giant 18th hole scoreboard with his hole-by-hole scores across the board. I think you're right about Lanny being a contender at that tournament, too!
I was working as a tournament volunteer at Firestone on a committee called "Scoring Control" in those days. I remember that the scores were radioed in by women who sat at every green. Everyone was shocked as Ollie kept putting up birdie after birdie enroute to his course record.
When Tiger tied it years later, I was standing next to Butch Harmon (his coach at the time) and told him that THIS is not supposed to happen at Firestone! Butch just grinned.
Did you get to see the induction speeches? I thought Olazabal's was one of the best I've heard in a long time. Also, Rich Lerner (who I'm not a big fan of) also did a good job hosting it.
good story.
That story reminds me of the time one my golfing buddies finally beat me after I repeatedly beat him.
I forked over the $10 bill and congratulated him on a well played match. he said he might frame the bill and would I mind signing it. I told if he was going to frame it, could I write him a check?
Why doesn't Lenny play on the Champions Tour now?
