Tour Talk - WGC -- HSBC -- does it count as a PGA Tour event?    Back to Topics  Page: 1 of 1

Just wondering since I can't seem to find this information anywhere: all the other WGC events count towards the PGA Tour money list as well as points for world ranking. And since this is now a WGC event, is it treated like the others?

No. The winner gets to play in next year's SBS (formerly Mercedes) Championship, and will get a bunch of WGR points. But he doesn't (automatically) get to play in the Masters, and he isn't credited with an official PGA win or earnings.

This is a good explanation of the HSBC.
-------------------------
In one of the most baffling decisions ever made by the International Federation of PGA Tours, the HSBC was promoted to a WGC event.

Yet the tournament will not use the World Golf Rankings to determine the 78-man field, will not carry the customary two-year PGA Tour exemption and Masters invitation for the winner, and any earnings will not be recognized by the PGA Tour.

Going one step further into absurdity, the winner of the HSBC Champions will be given entry into the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Maui, which is a winners-only event on the PGA Tour, yet no other perk normally accorded to the winner of a WGC event will be recognized by the PGA Tour.

What??

"So it's a WGC with an asterisk," Geoff Ogilvy suggested.

"If it's not going to have the same field as the rest of them, it's not really a world event, is it?" said Robert Allenby of the newly named WGC event.

Since the HSBC is being played in China it is not surprising to me that there is something smelly about it. :)

Don't say too many bad things about China, they own America. Pretty soon they'll be running the American tour if we don't watch out.

The only thing of value that we have to turn over to China to payback what we owe them is our real estate and natural resources.
For example, how much are the Yosemite National Park and the Yellowstone National Park worth?

Here is a list of parks that could be turned over to China.

This is only the 5th year playing this championship in China, it's still working out the bugs. Finchim decides whether or not it's an official win on the PGA tour, not the Chinese or the Asian tour. Your beef is really with Finchim. But I expect this tournament to become an official win with official money really soon.....especially after the Tiger-Phil battle this weekend in this strong field.

Try to remember the British Open wasn't considered an official win with official money until 1995.....or 135 years after it began. And this was a major championship yet!
