This was a question posed on a GC telecast a few weeks ago and prompted a bit of a debate between Brandel Chamblee and one of the oncourse commentators.

What distance would you rather be from the pin - your full sand wedge distance or 40 yards, leaving a half wedge or less?

I actually enjoy the "dead hands" 30-40 yard pitch (as taught by Dave Pelz) because I practice it so much in the short game practice area at our course but a lot of golfers dread this shot.

Depends. Normally I would always prefer the shorter shot. But if I have a 40 yard shot with tight lie in the fairway and a green side bunker to clear, and a fairly tight pin - then I would prefer a full sand wedge from further back.

Speaking as a person who doesn't get to practice much, I would prefer the full shot. I think those finesse shots are a lot more difficult for the average hacker.

If there is plenty of green (~~20 yds), I would rather have a 40 yd pitch shot.

It wouldn't make any diff to me... my full wedge goes about 40 yards..

The 40 yard shot IS my sand wedge full shot.At 18 hdcp. I am more comfortable with a full 9iron than my wedges. I tend to miss hit wedge shots more often than 8 & 9 irons.
